| The opening of the Giro d’Italia in Palermo, Sicily, saw the return to top-level cycling of 3T, one of Italian cycling’s most illustrious names.
Team CSC’s race bikes are equipped with the latest and lightest 3T components: Ergosum handlebars, Arx Team stems, Funda Team forks, and, on the time-trial bikes, the slender and elegant Ventus Ltd aerobar.
The nine-member line-up to campaign the season’s first major tour, first run in 1909, included Australian sprinter Stuart O’Grady, German veteran Jens Voigt, and the young Danish hope Chris Anker Sørensen.
Team CSC got off to a splendid start: Sørensen took the White Jersey for Best Young Rider in the opening day’s closely contested team time trial. CSC placed second, just six seconds behind winners Slipstream, on the tight 28.5-kilometer course in Palermo.
And the following day CSC successfully defended the jersey, with Sørensen advancing to third on general classification.
But fortunes ebb and flow in cycle racing. A cruel third stage, around the flanks of Mount Etna, saw numerous crashes that put both O’Grady and his Australian team-mate Brad McGee out of the race, and Chris Anker Sørensen losing 35 seconds and the jersey.
Crashes go with the turf – and the seven men still on the road battle on to consolidate Team CSC’s early-season successes. There were victories in three continents before March was out, including Fabian Cancellara’s glorious win in the European season’s opening classic, Milan-Sanremo, and his earlier success in the Prologue of the Tour of California.
3T is proud that the world’s number-one professional cycling team is putting its trust in our components, chosen personally by team owner Bjarne Riis. See more on the CSC-3T deal.
Our sponsorship of Team CSC reprises a long history of racing success – down the years, many great champions used 3T handlebars and stems. The company’s founder, Mario Dedioniggi, was celebrated for his pioneering use of new, lighter materials – in his day, aluminium alloys. Find out more about 3T’s engineering roots.
